Greetings

The greetings at work, sometimes I wonder if they really mean it. Does it happen where you work too?

On Monday morning:

Colleague Y : Good morning
Colleague Z : Morning (Eyes half open)

Anytime during the week:

Colleague A : Hi! How are you?
Colleague B : Good.
Colleague A : Good.

Colleague K : Hi! How are you?
Colleague L : Fine. And you?
Colleague K : Fine.
Colleague L : Later

On Friday afternoon:

Colleague E : Hello! How are you?
Colleague F : I’m fine, thank you. What about you?
Colleague E : I’m feeling great. It’s almost weekend.
Colleague F : Indeed. Any plans for the weekend?
Colleague E : My kids are with me this weekend. We are going to Efteling.
Colleague F : That’s nice.
Colleague E : And you, any plans?
Colleague F : Oh well, I have no one this weekend. I think I will just sleep in and rest a bit apart from doing the cleaning, laundry, shopping as we all do.
Colleague E : Oh yeah. I know what you mean. Well! Have fun this weekend.
Colleague F : Thank you. You too.

Found a Missing Chapter

When a chapter is closed, one tends to move on to the next chapter in life. Once the book is finished, there is no re-reading especially when a book is borrowed. The books that I have closed and left behind are kept somewhere in the dark room or probably have already been eaten by the bugs or cockroaches. However, there is one particular chapter that I suddenly stumbled upon when browsing the cyber. I was so thrilled that I was going to do something with this missing chapter for more than a decade.

Having to take the first step to ask a person if she was the person of so-and-so is not a piece of cake. One has to have guts to do so. The minute I checked my mobile phone and saw that I had a message waiting for me, I was thrilled. I jumped from my bed and took my laptop back to my study room and went online. Sure enough, I have found my heroin.

We sent messages to each other and half a day later, I picked up the phone and dialed her number. Could life be even greater?

9 to 11 years ago I joined a Mandarin course at a college back home in the Land Below The Wind. Although I had a bit of Mandarin knowledge, the teaching methodology was different since we were using alphabets rather than the Chinese characters.

I remembered I found a bunch of papers in Mandarin language in one of my dad’s wooden boxes. I realised that that was how he got his skill of speaking Mandarin with a different accent. That was also the way how I learned to speak ‘proper’ Mandarin at the college.

During those years of doing the course at the UiTM, I learned about the language and the teacher. She is not Chinese and neither has she married to one. She speaks very fluent Mandarin with a slang that you can only hear on television, in which we eventually learned that she did go to Taiwan to master the language.

Our parting class was when we, the Mandarin class students, had to sing a classic Mandarin song in our beautiful Chinese costumes: red for the girls and white for the boys. It was such a sad moment that we did have a tear or two with the heavy feelings to part from our fellow coursemates and especially our strict but lovely Mandarin teacher, Ding Lao Shi.

Paris Photos

There was a story of my Paris Trip in writing and the magic and wonder of it are all taken by some shots. These are just 1/9 of the photos I took in Paris with my new SLR Canon.

Paris Trip

Magnifique! Window shopping, shopping, sightseeing and taking shots of beautiful architechture in a beautiful city called Paris, nothing can beat the love in the air, the music along the road and areas, the clear blue sky and the beautiful tongue.

Somewhere in Paris. Magnificient!

Somewhere in Paris. Magnificient!

My first impression of Paris was it was not as stinky as Rome. The metro and train stations are complicated when you don’t know the destination or you could end up somewhere in a totally different direction. However, people are very helpful, without even asking for their help, there would be an angel or two elsewhere calling, “Salute! Do you need help?”

That was our first night on our arrival in Paris, 2 angels at a different time to offer their kindness so we could reach our destination just a bit of the outskirt of Paris to have a good night sleep before starting off of our idea of being in Paris that weekend.

Saskia from The Hague met me at the building where I work in Rotterdam around 5.30pm when I just finished my Thursday’s duty. We took a train to Brussel in Belgium and from there took the Thalys to Paris Nord. By the time we arrived at her sister’s place, it was way past midnight. A simple and tiny space that consists of a tiny room, a tiny kitchen and a bathroom, cost about EUR700 rental plus energy and water which is considered very costly for a student.

On Friday, we decided to take it easy. Went to a nearby supermarket, about 5 minutes walk and bought some necessary stuff and food for 2 to 3 days. The frozen area was really awesome. I could just grab any kind of ready-made meals for the daily meal: Chinese style fried rice, Indian style fried rice, paella the Spanish style etc. All other stuff are available in the Netherlands but not these. My favourite was the shrimp that I ended up buying one pack to prepare for our breakfast/brunch that day.

After the meals, we took our leave to start off with the touring but on the way we changed our direction to a place where Olga bought her handbag which I admired. It was a very long street and there were tiny shops displaying beautiful evening/gala gown, outfit to work or for a formal occassion, handbags, shoes, jewelleries for both male and female and more. Since most of these shops owners are Jews, the shops closed on Saturday and closed the doors earlier that Friday. We made our way and found a couple of handbags for me and a pair of shoes after entering and exiting many countless shops. If not because of my other holiday trip in October to Malaysia and some other short trips during the year, I would have bought the whole shop. Hense my little shopping spree which is totally NOT. The best part was I could still use my skill of speaking Mandarin. I feel like home instantly when I hear Mandarin speakers around me. (No, I am not Chinese, just a bit of Chinese blood in my vein.)

Love is in the air

The other reason for not buying so many things that day was also due to the fact that we still had a lot to explore in the city. Carrying along the heavy plastic bags with heavy stuff did not really help our satisfaction. That was also the reason that we decided to come back the next time in the future for the spree. So, for this trip we could proudly say we did not contribute as much to the French economy but just enjoying the beauty and admiring what the city has to offer without paying a penny.

They say, go to Paris to find l’amour. I looked around, I saw couples hugging, kissing, smiling together, lying down on a hard brick stone while the chess is simply touched by the loved one while enjoying the breeze of the river. Spread the music in your vein out to the sky, that’s what I would call the musician and artists on the streets, along the river, in the middle of a dead road, under the bridge, they were all amazing.

I was glad that without even speaking the tongue as I originally thought it was important, I could understand the language of every creature.

We ended our wild expedition that Saturday in a restaurant/Karaoke pub. Since Saskia and I did not manage to go home to refresh and change ourselves, Olga (and Marianne) took evening shirts and parfume for us so we could refreshen up in the w.c. of the restaurant. E voila! We looked as good and sexy as the rest.

Our evening turned to night and night turned to the next dawn. We left the place at 5.40am by a city taxi and reached home after 6.00am. I was so sick of my ulcer problem that once we reached home, I washed up a bit and went to bed. We woke up after 11.00am, washed up and ready for our journey back home to the Netherlands with Thalys train in just about 3 hours Paris to Rotterdam.

I hope you enjoyed my share.

Leaving to Paris

Just a quick note this morning as I am in the midst of preparing to work and packing the last stuff that I need for my trip these few days.

I will be leaving to Paris this evening after work with my girlfriend. Unfortunately dear hubby has to work and cannot join me. Although it is only for a few days, I consider this a short holiday. So, there will be no internetting during this trip.

Ready to go to take a shower now and to say “aurevoir”.

Till Sunday. :)

Excited

The first thing that can happen, when you are connected with your childhood or teenhood friends through a source that you could never thought would be possible would happen, would be excitement.

This feeling has attacked me for a countless time but right now I can say it is way beyond my capability of not peeing on my pants.

Imagine! Having to see your high school classmates after being apart for nearly 20 years or more is just totally awesome. And THAT mind you is not inclusive of the other package yet: your childhood friends at primary school(s).

So, I could hardly blame the internet especially Facebook for this connection. I just hope Facebook will not face the hardness of life as Ringo has experienced.

This topic is especially my first discovery on long lost mates of St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Papar, Sabah, Malaysia: Fanny Chin, Beatrice D Mikil and Delia DJ Kitingan.

Some thoughts at work

I have missed 2 meetings at work today. Fortunately I was only the audience but unfortunately I missed all the facts that I needed to know about the company’s business, financial situation and also the consequences of the merger.

There was also the thing about the Hurrican Ike that hit America. Our big plants and offices that situated in Houston have a direct impact due to this natural disaster. Plants were shut down and offices were closed so the people could stay home and be aware of the disaster that was coming.

The second meeting was about our SAP system in Finance that the ‘experts’ were to discuss to improve certain processes.

The third meeting was a Dialogue with our Finance Director. Without any formal appointment, our Finance Director called my colleague and I to his office. We talked like normal colleagues. I did not feel awkward at all since he is a very open and matured guy. Here we call each other by the first name, no Mr or Mrs or Miss. His concern was about us both without our manager since this head of Finance has assigned him to go to our plant in France to give a hand there. We all know that there should not be a great impact since he did not stay in his new position for that long, not even 10 months. However this would not make the bosses in Huoston and the partner in Germany sit comfortably without worrying that the tasks at hand can be done single handedly by a newbie.

My motivation went down a bit when our Controller accepted the offer for a better position in the States. We understood that his decision is taken for his family advantage. I shall miss him as he does always acknowledge and appreciate my hardwork and his knowledge in technical accounting especially the USGAAP will be definitely missed.

It did not flatter me when my manager told my colleague and I about 2 news in one fine morning. Speechless? Stunned? Panicked? I was in such a situation for a couple of days. He was going to France and our Finance Director was leaving the company for a much better position in another company. And I was to work in a very stand alone way now with a new manager who has many other responsibilities to handle.

This has been planned. Whether I like it or not, I have to start digging. Reading all the boring contracts and schedule meetings with people.

At least our new manager, the Hongkese man, is a people manager and knows what he is talking about.
